With many fishing options for bass fishing in the United States South Florida has some of the best bass catching creel numbers anywhere. Many surveys have been conducted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife department in the South Florida Everglades with catches totaling up to 1.5 fish per hour. That's being conservative I can assure you especially during the low water spring fishing season! Largemouth bass are over abundant in the Everglades from February through July. The canal system covers hundreds of square miles of bass fishing heaven. These canals are lined with weedy cover like lily pads, sawgrass, and different submerged grasses which allow these bass to spawn every year with tremendous hatches of fry. These bass are caught many different ways from great topwater action to down the drop off ledges with plastics of all types. When these water levels are low from a lack of rain water the bass stage under the lily pads for some of the best topwater action.
The South Florida Everglades is probably the finest fishery in numbers anywhere! When January rolls around the water management district starts slowly lower the water levels for the upcoming hurricane season. After a month of pumping water into the ocean the bass are forced off the flats into the main canals and the bass fishing explodes with fun. This great bass fishing usually lasts into the summer months when the rain starts to dump to much water and floods the swamps or what we call the flats. Every year this process repeats itself and is quite predictable.
So if you are ever planning a largemouth bass fishing trip to the South Florida Everglades plan your vacation from February to about June and the timing will be perfect for some of the best fishing numbers of your life.

Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake entirely located within the borders of the United States. The lake expands over 730 square miles of bass fishing heaven. The numbers of bass swimming in Lake Okeechobee is staggering. Most the lake is 12 ft. deep or shallower with most of the bass fishing done in less than 5 ft. of water. The outer rim of the lake is lined with heavy vegetation and that is where most anglers concentrate their efforts. The vegetation consists of bullrushes and cattails, lily pads, and various sawgrasses which are all above the surface. The subsurface weeds consist of hydrilla, peppergrass, eelgrass, coontail, which allows the bass many feeding opportunities and cover. During the spring the largemouth bass use most of these vegetation areas for spawning especially if a hard bottom is close by. Many different types of baits work in South Florida for these bass. From plastic worms, flipping, topwater, spinnerbaits, rattletraps, jerkbaits, all the favorite baits will work great. If you're really looking for a trophy nothing works quite as well as large wild shiners. South Florida provides some of the best bass fishing in the United States from Lake Okeechobee south to the Florida Everglades.
