Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake entirely located within the borders of the
United States. The lake expands over 730 square miles of bass fishing heaven. The numbers of bass swimming in Lake Okeechobee
is staggering. Most the lake is 12 ft. deep or shallower with most of the bass fishing done in less than 5 ft. of water. The
outer rim of the lake is lined with heavy vegetation and that is where most anglers concentrate their efforts. The vegetation
consists of bullrushes and cattails, lily pads, and various sawgrasses which are all above the surface. The subsurface weeds
consist of hydrilla, peppergrass, eelgrass, coontail, which allows the bass many feeding opportunities and cover. During the
spring the largemouth bass use most of these vegetation areas for spawning especially if a hard bottom is close by. Many different
types of baits work in South Florida for these bass. From plastic worms, flipping, topwater, spinnerbaits, rattletraps, jerkbaits,
all the favorite baits will work great. If you're really looking for a trophy nothing works quite as well as large wild shiners.
